Most softscape delays trace back to five things missing from the drawing set. A short checklist to close them before mobilisation.
When a softscape package runs late, the cause is rarely the planting. It is usually a decision that was never recorded, discovered on site once the crew has already mobilised.
1. Finished soil levels
Planting levels need to be given relative to the adjacent hardscape, not just as a spot level. State the intended fall away from the plinth so drainage is designed rather than improvised.
2. Soil profile and depth
Specify the mix and the depth per zone. Lawn, shrub beds and trees all want different profiles, and a single blanket depth either wastes soil or starves the trees.
3. Plant sizes at supply, not at maturity
A schedule that lists mature spread tells the contractor nothing about what to buy. Give girth, height and bag size at the point of supply.
4. Irrigation source and pressure
Drip and sprinkler layouts depend entirely on available head. Confirm the source, the pump and the tank position before the network is designed.
5. Who maintains it, and for how long
Establishment is part of the work. Name the maintenance period in the scope so responsibility for the first season is unambiguous.
Close these five and the execution phase becomes a sequencing exercise rather than a series of site decisions.
